02.07.08: Snow Days
Yesterday's snowstorm reminded me of how winter used to be growing up. I grew up in Michigan ON lake Michigan. So, when there was a snowstorm....THERE WAS a snowstorm. I remember the little orange balls that people would put on their car antennas as a warning they were headed your way if your view was blocked by a 5 foot snow bank. And there were always five foot snow banks.
My brother and I used to build snow slides up the side of our big maple tree in the front yard. We would make giant snow boulders and stack them on top of each other until we reached the highest branch. We used ropes and our sleds and even made the dog pull the sleds with the snow boulders on them. Not unlike building the pyramids, I imagine.
We had so much snow growing up that when you fell backwards to make a snow angel you found yourself in a indent three feet deep. We had so much snow growing up that the mall parking lot was called Lake Minimichigan in April and May. We had so much snow growing up that you used as an ingredient in cooking.
I know most of you would say Bah-Humbug to yesterday's winter storm. Yes, it WAS a big storm. But.....if you think back just a few decades ago to how much it USED to snow in winter you probably felt the same as I did.
It felt like home.
