10/30/2007 Engineer Hockey
So, this is my first blog! It’s rather exiting!I would like to have my first topic be something topical going on here behind the
scenes at WOLX.There has been some confusion if professional hockey is still active.Actually, it has just been between
Tony, the engineer and myself. He is from Minnesota.Which apparently holds the almighty puck above the holy grail.I,
however, being from Wisconsin was unaware that professional hockey was still going.
I heard about a strike a couple years ago and that was it.I just assumed that nobody really cared and the strike still going on.But Tony, being an active hockey fan informed me that hockey is indeed the greatest sport of all time.Which was rather puzzling considering the other sports accepted in the United States as the “greatest sport ever”such as football, baseball, basketball.Heck, I’d even put soccer, golf, and every college sport I could think of, even track and (clears throat) NASCAR ahead of hockey in the category of sports. My point is that, hockey isn’t as popular as it was 20 even 15 years ago.It doesn’t get a lot of coverage on sports talk shows, or on sports television.I wouldn’t know what channel to go to on my television if I had an urge to watch a hockey game.
I watch a lot of sports channels, and I rarely ever see any hockey.Maybe it is that I’m just blind to it.Maybe when the highlights come on, there is a mental block and I visually see Brett Favre throwing another 82 yard touchdown pass to win in overtime in front of a national audience.Maybe.But I can give you numbers. The last hockey championship had 2.859 Million viewers in the deciding game of the series.So-- 2.859 millions viewers.I won’t even compare those small numbers to a football championship (93.1 Million 2007) or baseball championship.I will compare it to the least watched show on television.A Thursday night college football game last week has 4.2 million viewers. And Wizards of a Waverly Place on the Disney Channel had 4.8 millions viewers.WWE had more viewers too! I couldn’t find any numbers smaller than those.Fake wrestling on a cable channel had more viewers than professional hockey on broadcast TV.(the free channels)
In conclusion, A show on the Disney channel, and a Thursday night college football game, and a fake sport had more viewers than the Championship game in professional hockey!I’m not saying hockey isn’t a sport, I’m saying that I didn’t know it was still an active sport.

Do you think hockey is as big as it was 20 years ago?
