11/26/07 Patient Shoppers
This last Thursday night was a long night for some people. More people than I would have thought. I'm talking about the people in line at the Best Buy's, and other stores patiently waiting to get a good deal on something they don't need. I was in Dubuque Iowa this last Thursday night visiting my sister, and on my way back home from her house, I drove right past the Best Buy. This was about 10 o'clock at night. I noticed that the parking lot was full of vehicles. So, I drove into the parking lot to see what all of the fuss was about.
I can estimate that there were about 250 people in line to get some "great deals" when the doors open. After questioning the first couple of people in line, they had arrived to form the line and have been in their lawn chairs in 25 degree weather for about 8 hours. And the store wasn't gonna open for another 7. They were still in for a long night. Some others had brought along a propane heater to keep warm, others brought lots and lots of blankets. All to save some money on a TV or computer. It is also my understand that there was a 50" plasma TV for about $1500. I know that is a pretty good deal for your money, but would you really sit in line for 15 hours on Thanksgiving to reep the savings? Or the laptop for $300. These numbers are not even correct. They are just what the people in line were telling me.
Then you have the late arrivals toward the end of the line that spent 9 hours in the freezing cold to get to the store and learn that the product they have come to save all this money on, was out of stock. I'm sure that these stores don't have an unlimited supply of these products. I've been told that there is a really low supply of each product, and when they are gone...they are gone. So, the poor people who waited 9 hours to for the savings, just wasted all of that time when they find out they sold out.
I say, just fork out the extra couple hundred bucks. Or get a different product. Does it matter if the Tv is a 50" plasma, or a "46? Or does it really matter if it is a plasma. I went Tv shopping about 4 months ago, where i learned the difference between 720p, 1080i, 1080p. The difference between plasma and LCD. HD & Blu Ray. And believe me when I say this. A NORMAL PERSON CANNOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE. You can't. I have perfect vision. 20/20. I could not see the difference in plasma to LCD. The only difference I seen was on the price tag.
My advice, if a 50" plasma is what you really want. Wait a couple more months. The price will have come down, and just buy it then. But then new products will have come out, and the cycle will continue, and those people will be in line for 15 more hours in the freezing cold waiting to catch the "savings" on something else they don't need.

Have you ever sat in line for a long time to spend money?
Nope. I'm not that crazy.
