11/5/07 Cable VS. Big Ten Network

Ok. Everybody seems to have an opinion on this whole, Cable TV VS. Big Ten Network and not being able to watch our beloved Badgers on TV. Here is mine…

I pay about $100 a month for my cable TV and high speed internet. I’ve lived in Minneapolis where cable has competition, and I got the exact same service for about half the cost of what we pay here in Madison.

I believe that if the City of Madison would let there be some competition for cable in this town, we wouldn’t be debating this issue at all. If there was more than one cable service in town, one of them, would have picked up the Big Ten Network, and it wouldn’t cost us nearly what we are paying for cable right now. If there was competition, the provider that carried the Big Ten Network, would receive so much business that the cable providers would be fighting over who could carry BTN. If not all of them would have it, as well as the NFL network. That’s is the bottom line.

I know there are alternative options for this. Satellite being one of them. And I would switch to satellite if there wasn’t a long lasting contract commitment. But when we cannot get the Badgers in Madison, that is pretty pathetic. The actual city that houses the team, cannot have access to their games on their one choice of cable TV. Even when they play a team with as big of a rivalry as Ohio State, as well as being the #1 team in the nation. Hmmm?? So, after the football season, comes basketball season. And 2/3 of the basketball games can only be seen on the Big Ten Network. That will be the deciding factor that puts all of southern Wisconsin into a fury. Especially if the Badgers are ranked.

If cable doesn’t pick up BTN before the end of the basketball season, I can put in an educated guess that some cable provider will be carrying BTN by the start of football season next year. We don’t have to take all of this non-sense.

It is absolutely pathetic at the rising cost of cable television in this town, we cannot even watch the pride of the town! How much more support do we have to show the UW, cable service providers, and the Big Ten Network that we NEED our Badgers. Isn’t that we put 80,000 screaming fans all wearing cardinal red into Camp Randall on any given Saturday. What else do we need to do? And you can’t tell me to call an 800 number. There is more we can do than just dial one number and make all of this go away. Just stand up for what we deserve in Madison. I can say that in Madison, there are way more people that would be willing to pay that extra couple bucks a month to watch all of the games they would be missing.

Here is an idea. Of the 70 some channels offered in the basic packages, take out a couple of the channels that nobody would really miss, (Jewelry Television by CAN, Style, G4, TV Super Store, Shop NBC) and add Big Ten Network. Would those channels even out? No price adjustments. Then everybody would be happy, except a couple of people who watches those channels. But I would bet my life savings that there are more people here in Madison that would rather have their Badgers than those channels I previously mentioned. I’m done.  Feel free to comment.
