12.13.07: Mother Nature Is A Hot Topic
|
How many store clerks have you had a conversation with this holiday shopping season? I've talked to a few and I've made an observation. The conversation with strangers always seems to default to the weather. Granted, the weather certainly has been something to talk about as of late but I find it interesting how often that topic comes up.
If I'm greeted by someone at the door I'll get asked, "Is it cold enough out there for you?" or "Is it snowing yet?"
Or if I'm checking out my purchase the conversation will revert to, "Did you hear we are getting another three inches of snow tonight?" or "How was it driving on those slippery roads today?"
Not that there is anything wrong with bringing up the weather as a topic of conversation. I'm just amazed as to how often it really does. And don't get me wrong, I'm just as eager to talk of the weather as the next stranger.
I'm just trying to figure out why the weather is a default. Maybe because it's easy, convenient, relatable?
Maybe everyone loves the weather? Maybe everyone hates the weather? Maybe we're all just a bunch of geeks?
Well, whatever the reason I thank the weather for being an "ice breaker" (pardon the pun) during a season when you meet lots of people for a short period of time during a time when dealing with strangers might be a little more aggravating than usual. The weather makes us all happy to talk about..........because we're not just talking about the weather. We're all talking about our lives and how we all deal with the same issues and problems in our lives. You get to know a lot about a person when you talk about the weather.
