Favre's greatness was made off the field.
Don't get me wrong- I know that Brett Favre's on-the-field skills and accomplishments will forever put him in the best-quarterback-ever discussion. But it was what Brett Favre was and did, and didn't do, off the field that made him truly great and forever will continue to do the same.
Brett Favre treated others with respect. Brett Favre spoke his mind, often disagreeing with coaches, management, media, but he always did so in a respectful manner. Brett Favre emphasized the importance of loving what he did, and doing what he loved. Brett Favre showed by his actions on and off the field that he was not a "me-first" kind of guy.
No, Brett Favre wasn't perfect. I don't know anybody who is. But I do know many who think that they're perfect, and I'm pretty sure that Brett never thought he was.
I was not sad when I heard the news of Brett Favre's retirement today. That surprised me, because each of the past few years that we've awaited a retirement announcement I thought for sure that I would be sad when that announcement finally came. Rather, I felt admiration for the man who was able to make his own call while still on two feet and with the respect that he deserves.
The sadness won't come until September, when there won't be a number 4 running out of the tunnel at Lambeau.....
