Gas goes up, I go shopping online...
Gotta say that a good price, no sales tax, and free delivery sure makes it easy to buy some of life's neccesities online. that said, it doesn't mean that I'm not sensitive to the local retailer.
But the local retailer that gets my business is usually the one that has a uniqueness or convenience that I can't get online. Likewise, my best buys online are for things I just can't seem to find anywhere around town. So... I'm fairly certain that the two can happily co-exist, while the pressure will always be on the local retailer who simply duplicates what's available in lots of other places.
That said, here's a tip for an online shopping destination that's local, yet always has some pretty cool stuff that you might never find in a local shop. Madison's Kim and Jason have one of the most fun, interesting, and interactive websites I've ever seen and it includes the Lemonade Stand, a virtual variety store of funky and fun gadgets, tools, and gifts.
