Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Speed Racer
|
Rated PG - 2h15

Sorry Speed, flashy colors don’t seem to help your first and probably last big screen performance.
For those not in the know, Speed Racer is a real character played by Emile Hirsch. He’s a born racecar driver who would give the Boy Scouts a challenge in an honest person contest. His family/pit crew/cheering section include John Goodman, Susan Sarandon as Dad and Mom, and Christina Ricci as Speed’s girlfriend Trixie. All were as bad as a flat tire.
In the film, Speed Racer tries to set racing records while rejecting come-ons from the evil businessman who wants Speed to join his team, therefore race for “the man.”
The film uses live actors, who work almost entirely in front of green screens. It gives the film a very flashy look, but I think that the style often leads actors to deliver lesser performances. Such is the case in Speed Racer. The racing action sequences are thrilling, but outside of that, things get a little boring.
Once I figured out that everyone was trying very hard to emulate the cartoon, the film took on a different life. Then, it drew me in, as I believed it all was an extended session of Saturday morning cartoons (anyone remember that?) instead of an action flick.
I know Matthew Fox will take heat for his portrayal of Speed Racer’s main competitor, Racer X. He delivers a lot of cheesy one-liners, but I though they were kinda cool. I think the rest of the teen and pre-teen boys that this movie is aimed at might agree.
