Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Atonement
Rated R - 2h10 Reviewed 1.21.08
There something every one of us wishes we had done differently. Atonement reminds us it never too late to make good.
Keira Knightly and James McAvoy star in the period piece set during World War II in England. McAvoy is the under-employed house worker for Knightly’s rich family and is wrongly accused of a crime by her immature and childish sister.
Like dominoes falling, the young girl’s lie sends McAvoy to prison and eventually to war. Knightly also ends up forsaking her family, because she is in love with McAvoy, and the family believes the lie.
I’m not a giant fan of period pieces and although this was an interesting and good story, it's not exactly my cup of tea. It wasn’t until Vanessa Redgrave shows up in the final minutes as an older version of the young sister, that the film moves into greatness.
Still, in the end I didn’t feel the undeniable Romeo and Juliet love between McAvoy and Knightly that should have been there. That would have made the main conflict of them being apart, that much more tragic.
Second Opinion: The other couple I saw the film with loved it, but my girlfriend Vanessa did not. She’s not a big fan of period pieces, so that aspect bored her.
