Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Baby Mama
Rated PG-13 - 1h36 Reviewed 5.2.08
I like Tina Fey so much, that I was willing to sit through 90 minutes of pregnancy talk.
Kate (Fey) is a successful businesswoman who has a one in a million chance of getting pregnant. She hires an uncouth working class girl named Angie (Amy Poehler) to be her surrogate. Little does Kate know that Angie is faking the pregnancy, just to get Kate’s money. Except along the way, they become friends.
While the filmmakers hit on several pregnancy movie clichés (comical morning sickness, first time Mom jokes...etc), there’s still some fresh and clever wit to go around. (Kate saying her karaoke video game avatar is dressed like a whore) There’s also a healthy dose of Odd Couple comedy, but distractions from the supporting cast including Steve Martin, Sigourney Weaver and Greg Kinnear make it bearable.
You get the feeling like the film is several SNL sketches strung together, but they still manage to piece together a consistent plot. Its definitely above and beyond the typical SNL fare that Lorne Michaels churns out.
Was Baby Mama great comedy? I’d say no, but it was one of the more enjoyable movies about pregnancy that I’ve seen.
