Popcorn And A Movie With Adam
Be Kind Rewind

Rated PG-13 - 1h41
Reviewed 2.26.08

This could have been a great movie if it focused on what it was trying to do. Either focus how on how a community activity can bring people together, or show Jack Black’s wacky shtick.

Black (Jerry) leads what seemingly would be a strong cast including Mos Def (Mike), Danny Glover (Mr. Fletcher) and Mia Farrow (Miss Falewicz). Mr. Fletcher owns a failing, smalltime, broken down corner video store. Mike loyally works there. Jerry hangs around it and Miss Falewicz rents videos there. Faced with closure, Mr. Fletcher goes off on a reconnaissance mission to see how the big stores work and Mike is left in control.

Jerry somehow becomes magnetized by a nearby power station and ends up accidentally erasing all the VHS videos, and they come up with the idea of recreating the erased films in their own quirky low budget style. They were funny, but that's not what the entire film is about.

The movie industry gets word of it and shuts down what become largely popular rentals. So the cast decides to make an original movie with the people in the neighborhood as the actors and feel good about their community spirit.

That was great idea, but if they were trying for a feel good flick, why not make the rest of the plot plausible? Black’s character drifts between a conspiracy theory believing, street person who wears a metal spaghetti strainer on his head, to a community leader. Its as if him getting magically magnetized was something that could happen every day.

Also, I enjoy Black’s quirky physical comedy, but I’ve seen it already. I’ve also seen him succeed in serious roles. This was a wishy-washy in-between.

Second Opinion: My friend Jonathan liked it even less than me.
