Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Chicago 10
Rated R - 1h50 Reviewed 3.27.08
Although this is a creative mix of animation and music, you should really see Chicago 10 for all of the stock footage.
The film retells the story of the Chicago 7 (Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and more) who were put on a show trial for inciting riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It flips back and forth between courtroom transcripts that are voiced by actors and animated, and stock footage of the seven.
With few exceptions, Chicago 10 manages to maintain intensity throughout its 110-minute runtime that makes it very watchable.
Made 30 years after the Vietnam War, the subject matter is strikingly relevant today. From opinions on the war, to hidden discrimination in the justice system, the film succeeds in documenting the frustration of a generation that was trying to change the world for the better.
One scene in particular sticks out. I had always heard that Black Panther party founder Bobby Seale was gagged in the courtroom during the trial, but to see a man bound and double gagged on a judge’s order was shocking. They left him to struggle to free himself in front of a jury and how it exposed how corrupt the system was.
Chicago 10 is a must see.
Second Opinion: My friend Jonathan also gave it a high rating. He noted the film also showed the difficulty of police and Chicago leaders in trying to maintain order.
