Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Cloverfield
Rated PG-13 - 1h27 Reviewed 1.21.08
Lovers of the TV series Lost and just about anyone else looking for an edge of your seat sci-fi thriller are in for a treat.
Cloverfield is the name of the government file about a monster attack on New York City. The entire film is shot through a hand held video camera and documents the night that the monster arrives. Its very Blair Witch Project in that that aspect, but even with the hand held camera, the production value is much better.
It starts with a group of twenty-somethings at a going away party. They eventually end up on the run from downtown New York, which is crumbling at the hands of the monster. There are some very obvious and clear imagery connecting it to 9/11, which may cause some uneasiness, but it’s quickly forgotten as the plot progresses.
It’s a pretty basic effort because there is no soundtrack, no giant Hollywood stars and no silly explanation of why the monster decides to invade Manhattan. Cloverfield also holds true to one of the essential elements of fright films, not giving the monster up. At times, I found myself pleading to get a better look at the creature. The characters also manage to deliver a realistic portrayal, granted the surreal situation.
The only improvement I could have see was maybe giving two or three different perspectives of the monster invasion instead of sticking with the same characters. Still, you should go see Cloverfield for a good thrill.
Second Opinion: My friend Jonathan loved it too. We’ll probably go see it again before it leaves the theater.
