Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Horton Hears A Who!
Rated G - 1h28 Reviewed 3.15.08
While the other Seuss film adaptations have been major flops, Horton Hears a Who! does a decent job of staying true to the message that the good doctor was trying get across.
Sure, there are some liberties taken in transforming a short book into an 88-minute motion picture, but the message of respecting other people stands. Jim Carrey atones for his mistakes from How the Grinch Stole Christmas, portraying Horton, the caring elephant. He manages to voice the part without making himself the only focal point.
Steve Carell is the quirky Mayor of Whoville. After last year’s irritating Evan Almighty, Carell shows he can make the funny in the children’s genre.
For the kids, there was just the right amount of balance between grown up concepts like goodwill towards others and innerspace and all out silly cartoon craziness.
That’s being said, I’m very leery of current film projects that try to take childhood classics and give them a modern spin. All too often, they end up mutating what was once a pure idea in the name of money. It also takes the magic of imagination away from the child reading the book, and forces them to envision the story based on what’s represented on screen. Horton was entertaining to see, but I still recommend reading the book.
