Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Penelope
Rated PG - 1h41 Reviewed 3.4.08
Despite its faults, the modern fairytale Penelope is actually a sweet movie that has a good lesson inside.
Christina Ricci plays Penelope, the daughter of a cursed aristocratic couple, who is born with a pig nose. As a child, her parents shield her from the paparazzi crazed public because of her stand-out snout and even go as far as faking her death.
Penelope is then raised in isolation, yet she turns out a surprisingly well-adjusted person. She doesn’t even seem to have body issues, despite her mother’s constant pestering about hiding her nose.
Penelope’s curse can be broken if she can find another aristocrat to marry her. Enter James McAvoy, a would-be prince whose gambling habit has broken his spirit. Penelope eventually decides on her own to stop hiding her nose because she’s grown enough to accept herself, as is. As does McAvoy.
It’s a charming idea, although poorly executed at times. You’d think with a strong supporting case including Reese Witherspoon and Catherine O’Hara, it would be better. Sadly it’s not true. There are plot holes and logical errors. The good thing is, kids will be the ones that enjoy this and they’ll overlook the nonsensical problems.
Hey, if you ask me, even with the pig nose, Christina Ricci is still good looking.
