Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Rambo
Rated R - 1h43 Reviewed 2.3.08
Sylvester Stallone may seem like a meathead, but he’s actually pretty good at what he does.
Stallone has mastered his role as John Rambo, a despondent, well-trained Vietnam Vet, a man without a country. This time around he’s not taking on an entire nation’s army, like in First Blood (or Part Two). Instead he’s a man who chooses not engage in a society he feels that he doesn’t belong to.
We find Rambo living in Burma, as quietly as he can. A group of missionaries then charter his boat to head into a war torn area of the country, where a ruthless government is committing genocide on its residents. He reluctantly drops them off, only to return later after hearing they’ve disappeared.
As you may expect, Rambo does much of the talking with his weapons. I think Stallone only has about a paragraph worth of dialogue in the whole film. That’s ok, because that’s what Rambo does. In this case, the blood of the bad guys spills and limbs are being gunned off at an exponential rate. Maybe we would have better served with a body count ticker on the top right of the screen.
It took me right back to the first time I watched (and enjoyed) the fantasy violence of the Stallone, Schwartzenegger and Van Damme action flicks of the 1980’s. Rambo won’t make the cut for the Oscars, or anybody’s best of list, but it does deliver what you expect. And, it can be entertaining.
Second Opinion: Fletch seemed to like Rambo for what it was, but didn't consider it a quality film.
