Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Smart People
Rated R - 1h35 Reviewed 3.18.08
Smart People just goes to show that you can be book smart and emotionally stupid all at the same time.
That said, I think Dennis Quaid is one of the unsung heroes of Hollywood today. He plays a self-absorbed and widowed professor who’s lost his passion. About the same time, his adopted slacker brother comes back into his life, so does the potential for a new love. Both give him the opportunity to turn things around and enjoy living life once again.
Even though Smart People is filled with some highbrow comedy, you still can relate to the brainies’ humanity and can you relate to their faults. Thomas Hayden Church sneaks in the right amount of comic relief. He’s the opposite of smart, Quaid’s unemployed, pot smoking, and lazy brother. (See Sideways)
My one criticism is for Ellen Page, the professor’s daughter. She’s the same snarky teen as she played in Juno. She needs to expand her repertoire before she gets typecast and we get bored.
All in all, you find the characters are just as dysfunctional as the rest of us. That’s a nice feeling to go home with.
Second opinion: My friend Jonathan also enjoyed it.
