Popcorn And A Movie With Adam Stop Loss
Rated R - 2h53 Reviewed 4.2.08
Though political at its base, Stop Loss is not an anti-war movie. It’s rather a look at the struggles that our soldiers face, while doing the only thing they want to, serve their country.
Ryan Phillippe stars as platoon leader Brandon King, a soldier retuning from his tour in Iraq, only to find out that he is subject to the Army’s stop loss policy, which extends tour lengths. Phillippe goes above and beyond any of his previous performances, doling out some intense raw emotion.
After returning to Texas, we start to see the post traumatic stress of our lead character and his fellow soldiers in adjusting to back to civilian life. King later goes AWOL after learning he has been stop lossed and makes a fruitless journey to Washington to try and speak to a politician that made him a political promise.
That idea weakens what is otherwise a solid story that digs far beyond politics into deeper ideas about country, duty and civil disobedience. You’d think the soldier would already know chatting to a politician would be ineffective.
MTV still manages to spoon feed the ideas with some good ol’ youthful relationship drama. Nonetheless, Stop Loss is still genuine in its portrayal of the hardships that soldiers face in country and back home.
