Popcorn And A Movie With Adam
Street Kings

Rated R - 1h49
Reviewed 4.15.08

We may know who will police the police, but who will protect us from Keanu Reeves?

Street Kings is a morality play about whether the ends justify the means. Literally, Street Kings is a reference to a Los Angeles vice police squad. They’re the guys that get the dirty work done. They protect the public from the worst of the worst criminals, but they’re doing it by breaking the law.

Keanu Reeves (Detective Tom Ludlow) is the point man on the squad that’s led by an always-impressive Forest Whitaker. Their roles evoked feelings of Jack Nicholson playing Colonel Nathan Jessep in A Few Good Men. You don’t like to think of them, but you want them standing guard. Hugh Laurie plays the Internal Affairs Captain who we hate at first, until we see his true motives.

When a fellow officer that could bring expose Ludlow is gunned down, the gears are set in motion. Ludlow wants a revenge murder, but he finds more than he expects.

Surprisingly, Keanu Reeves gives a dark and compelling performance as a gutsy rogue cop. We don’t exactly see why he acts the way he does, and that makes us wonder about him. His out of the ordinary conduct is what drives the plot.

Unfortunately, even with co-stars like Whitaker it was too easy to dissect what was going to happen and we fall victim to a predictable outcome.
