Popcorn And A Movie With Adam
There Will Be Blood

Rated R - 2h38
Reviewed 1.28.08

From the title, you get the feeling that you’re in for a slasher flick, but in some ways There Will Be Blood is apt name.

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview, a grizzly oil prospector from 1900, who hates people and lives on greed. You could argue that he’s an expert businessman who knows how to separate fools from their money, but I would say he’s closer to a sociopath.

His performance is what clearly what drives this film. I think it’s fair to compare his work to Pacino in Scarface or Brando in The Godfather.

Plainview’s foil is a young hellfire and brimstone evangelical preacher named Eli Sunday, who lives in the same community that Plainview wants to drill in. We get the feeling that he is also an expert in separating people from their money, except he works in the name of god. The power struggle between Plainview and Sunday leaves you on edge.

While you’re waiting for the blood to flow, try to sit back and enjoy feeling that something grandiose is about to happen. If you’ve seen Citizen Kane, you know nothing good can happen when a man’s only desire is to build his own empire.

Second Opinion: My girlfriend Vanessa said it was a good film, but not her style.
