Popcorn And A Movie With Adam 21
Rated PG-13 - 2h3 Reviewed 3.29.08
Simple math will tell you that the card counting thriller, 21 is a something of big deal.
Inspired by a true story of how some of how some brilliant M.I.T. students took Las Vegas for millions, 21 manages to keep a quick pace while still managing to slip you an ace or two.
Kevin Spacey plays an unorthodox math professor who recruits Ben (Jim Sturgess), a young wizard at numbers, to join a card counting team that clean up at the Blackjack table. The film mixes the good feelings of smooth hustle, with an inspiring story of a geek transforming into a man in control of his own destiny. It’s a reasonably believable plot because you feel like Ben is smart enough to pull off the numbers scam.
On the other side of the deck, 21 deals you a hand that’s sometimes too easy to read. There are several plot points that are transparent. Specifically, it felt like some of the winks and nods that the math team uses to signal each other are fairly blatant and obvious.
Also on the down side, I didn’t pick up how to execute their card counting scam, so I felt a little cheated. No big Vegas score for me.
Second Opinion: Fletch & my friend Jonathan seemed to enjoy it as well.
