Popcorn And A Movie With Adam You Don't Mess With The Zohan
Rated PG-13 - 1h53 Reviewed 6.8.08
Adam Sandler fans will like to see their funnyman back up on the screen, but everyone else will be bored with his latest work.
In You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, Sandler plays an Israeli super spy, who tires of the military life and yearns to go to America, and become a hairstylist. He fakes his death during a battle with his Palestinian foil, The Phantom, played by John Turturro.
In many ways, the plot is the typical Sandler movie fare. The main character seeks to better themselves. They fall in love and learn a life lesson on the way to a happy ending. Sometimes raunchy (bulging pants) and often silly, (hacky sacking a live cat) the comedy is not exactly fresh.
While I laughed out loud at some of the better jokes, they are certainly in the Adam Sandler style. They won’t play for those who are already bored of him. Some of the political satire on the violence between Israel and Palestine is actually smart and witty.
I am a fan of his comedy from all the way back to Saturday Night Live, but I think he’ll need to switch gears fast. His fans from SNL have seen the jokes over and over and the newcomers will quickly tire of the 1980’s themes that continually show up in his films.
If you’re reading this Adam. I appreciate your efforts to make the world a better place through comedy, but I suggest more Punch Drunk Love and less Happy Gilmore.
